Hi everyone! I am Kylie, a Year 3 Social Sciences student majoring in Geography and Urban Governance. Some of my hobbies include swimming, cycling, fishing and volunteering.
When I was a freshman, I was provided with a number of lists indicating which Common Core courses are “leng grade and low workload” and “larn grade and high workload”. Believing in the importance of attaining a high GPA, I added “leng grade” Common Core courses into my temporary course list. However, when the course registration date came, I failed to enroll in all of them due to the bad internet connection and high demand from students. This made me rethink: “I guess I should just choose courses that I am interested in… With my slow computer, I would not be able to fight my way into these ‘leng grade’ courses anyways…”.
This was a choice I would not regret. The Common Core curriculum does not only allow me to acquire knowledge that I am passionate about, but also engage and collaborate with students from different faculties and age groups. One of the most interesting courses I have taken was CCHU9065 A Life Worth Living, which brought me exposure to various religious and philosophical traditions in search of an answer to the most fundamental question of human existence: “What makes life worth living?”. Throughout the course, I transformed into an avid Buddhist as I found Buddhism to be the most relatable and inspiring. It taught me not to crave for and be attached to objects and ideas such as fame, wealth and power, and instead accept the idea of non-self and emptiness of essence, as well as be kind, caring and compassionate to one another.
As a Common Core Student Consultant, I hope to provide constructive feedback to the Common Core Office to improve the content and impact of the Common Core curriculum. Also, feel free to talk to me if you are having difficulties in choosing a Common Core course that suits you!
