My name is Gayatri Joshi and I am pursuing a double degree in Arts and Education in English here at HKU. I was born in Bombay and came to Hong Kong around 10 years ago. Having graduated from a local school, I absolutely love the freedom and the exposure university has to offer.
I hold a strong passion for teaching and am very much motivated to further bring out the notion of teaching as an official profession, dismissing the idea of it being as a negligible career and along with it the saying “those who can’t do, teach”. Therefore I feel that issues like these should be brought up more often and discussed more deeply in the society, because it doesn’t only allow the community to see the other side of the coin but also put forth their misconceptions or confusions about the issue. This doesn’t only apply to teaching but many other imperceptible or maybe even controversial topics. By doing so I strongly prescribe to the fact that the community would be more engaging thus more understanding and much more informed, which I feel is such an important concept in the present world where people are going deeper into their personal bubbles, turning absolutely oblivious to the world around them. I strongly believe in the idea of effective communication among people in a society, because it doesn’t only keep everyone informed but also clears the taboos presented by a certain issue. And that’s the very reason I wanted to sign up for the Common Core Ambassador scheme, because I feel that the Common Core system exposes students to plenty of new and provocative topics, which give a great deal of space for discussion, surfaces our curiosity and allows us to get out of that bubble and see the world in a completely new light.
Strongly believing in the value I presented above, I hope to actually be able to make a change by listening to the opinions of different people.
